.............................Shepherds
Place Kennington Lane Lambeth
Above left is the original access to Shepherds Place
from Kennington Lane. This view would have been recognised by George
Musgrove when he visited his uncle Henry Cole in 1871. Unfortunately
no houses in Shepherds Place survived after the WW2 blitz. Shepherds
Place was renamed Harold Place. Both of these names still can be seen
on the side of the house adjacent to the original access which now
goes nowhere.
The Hayward Pickle Factory was situated directly behind Shepherds Place
in Montford Place. This received a direct hit by a V1 Flying Bomb (Doodle
Bug) in around 1944. The bomb damage map below shows two black circles
which signify the V1 damage area. The Haywards Pickle Factory is the
right hand circle. The other one shown top left over Kennington Lane
destroyed Prospect Place, the Terrace of houses where George and Chritiana
had lived.
The
photograph below is from Civil Defence records of bomb damage.
The view is looking north west from the bombed remains of the pickle
factory in Monford place. Shepherds Place is top centre showing
serious roof damage, and the houses in Kennington Lane are just
visible at the extreme top of the picture. In more recent years
Shepherds Place has become a Large car park for a newly built Tesco's
supermarket.
