Sam Digby Marries Myna Cohen
Sam Digby left school at 14 and became a London
docker. At the outbreak of WW2 he was called up and became
a Commando after several successful raids he was on the
invasion of Tobruk his ship was torpedoed he had to abandon
ship the captain and gunnery officer continued to fire
at the shore for over three hours until the ship sank.
He was then picked up and taken prisoner. After the war
he became a bookmaker and had offices in Regent Street.
He then worked for the Gas Board as a salesman. At around
the age of 70 he bought The Great Auk (pic on left) and
sailed alone to France and through the canals to the Mediterranean.
He also regulaly sailed to Paris and Amsterdam. He is pictured
below with his sister Blanche Wilson and her husband Walter.
