Clarissa Elizabeth Harris 1823 - 1904

William and Betsy's second child was Clarissa Elizabeth who was baptised at St George the Martyr Southwark on 7th December 1823.

  1. The family were then living at Castle Yard King Street Southwark. The map below dates from 1799 and shows the position of King Street off Borough High Road. Castle Yard is not identified at this time.
    The 1841 census records her living with her parents at Artichoke Court Granby Place Lambeth. At this time she was known as Elizabeth and was aged 13. At the age of 18 she married George Dowie, a stonemason, at Trinity Church Lambeth.,
  1. Official census records do not record the family until 1871 when they were living at 32 Richmond Street Lambeth.

    Children born to George and Clarissa over this period include Robert Willam Dowie (1847), Elizabeth Dowie, George Edward Dowie, Clarissa Caroline Dowie (1859), Charles Dowie, William Harris Dowie (1861), Eliza Catherine Dowie (1864), and Walter Joseph Dowie.

  2. The 1881 census shows the family living at 23 Rosemary Road Camberwell. They cannot be traced on the 1891 census, but by 1901 Clarissa, shown as Elizabeth Dowie is listed as a widow aged 78 at 48 Darrell Road Camberwell and is receiving Parish Relief. She died in Camberwell.



    We can only find marriage details for 4 of Clarissa and George's children.
    Their son Robert William Dowie married Emma Johnson 4th September 1870. They had at least five children.
    Their son George Edward Dowie married Catherine Heard. Their children were Emma b1879, Eliza Clara b1880, Elizabeth b1882, Clara b1884, Nellie b1886, George b1890, Robert b1892, Annie b1895, and Edward b1899 all born in Camberwell.
  3. Their daughter Clarissa Caroline Dowie married George Thomas Longley 19th October 1880. They had at least five children. Lastly their daughter Eliza Catherine Dowie married Edward Walker 18th October 1880 (the day before her sister).
